Tear Duct Irrigation
Tear duct irrigation, also known as lacrimal irrigation or nasolacrimal duct flushing, is a straightforward and commonly performed in-office procedure designed to both assess and treat blockages or narrowing within the lacrimal drainage system. The primary goal of this procedure is to determine whether tears are properly draining from the eyes through the tear ducts—specifically the puncta, canaliculi, and nasolacrimal duct—into the nasal cavity. This test helps identify any obstructions that may be causing symptoms. The procedure is typically recommended for patients experiencing excessive tearing (epiphora), as well as those with recurrent eye infections or conjunctivitis that suggest impaired tear drainage.
