Punctal Occlusion
Punctal occlusion is a safe and effective in-office procedure used to treat dry eye disease, particularly in cases where the eyes do not produce enough natural tears (aqueous-deficient dry eye). By partially or completely blocking the tear drainage system, punctal occlusion helps preserve natural tears on the ocular surface, improving lubrication, comfort and visual function.
Punctal occlusion is indicated for patientts with:
Aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (e.g., Sjögren’s syndrome)
Post-surgical dry eye (e.g., following LASIK, cataract surgery)
Contact lens intolerance due to dryness
Chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca
prolonged used of topical ocular medications (tear film instability)
It is often recommended for patients who have not achieved sufficient relief from artificial tears, prescription eye drops (e.g., cyclosporine, lifitegrast), or environmental modifications alone.
